Kutch industries face closure due to water shortage issues
Thousands of workers employed in industries in Kutch may be out of job soon, as many industries in the area are facing closure due to disruption in water supply from the last 15 days or so, a top body representing industries in Kutch has claimed.
The Federation of Kutch Industries Associations (Fokia), the apex body of industry associations in Kutch, and representing investments worth over Rs70,000 crore, has said that Gujarat Water Infrastructure Limited (GWIL) has stopped water supply to industries in Kutch for the past fortnight. Due to poor rains and absence of other water sources, most of the industries in Kutch are dependent on GWIL supply for meeting water needs.
“For nearly 15 days, GWIL has stopped supply of water. This is causing great difficulties for many industries. If this situation continues for 2 – 3 more days, many industries will have to shut down. This will affect more than three lakh people employed by these industries,” FOKIA said. Talking to dna, Nimish Phadke, MD of Fokia, said GWIL has stopped supplying water to industries citing shortage.
“The stoppage of water supply is affecting around 130 small, medium and large-sized industries in Bhachau, Anjar, Bhuj and Mundra. Many of these industries have been forced to stop production since there is no water,” he said.
